Mukul Rohatgi was the 14th Attorney General of India from 2014-2017. He is the senior council at the Supreme Court of India and an Indian lawyer. He was replaced by K.K. Venugopal. In 1992 he was nominated as senior counsel by Delhi High Court. In 1999 he was designated as additional solicitor general of India. His father Justice Awadh Behari Rohatgi was the former judge of Delhi High Court and senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India.

Mukul Rohatgi was born in Delhi on 17th August 1955. Rohatgi inherited legal excellence from his father late Justice Awadh Behari Rohatgi, who was the senior advocate of the Supreme Court of India and a former judge at Delhi High Court. Rohatgi completed his graduation in 1975 from Delhi University in commerce. In 1978 from the government law college Bombay University, he obtained his LLB degree. 2011 from the Fakir Mohan University, Odisha, he received his doctorate in law. In 2016 he was conferred a Doctor of Law LLD, by the Amity University Uttar Pradesh.

Mukul Rohatgi got married in 1981 with Smt. Vasudha Rohatgi is also a trained advocate. In order to look after the households Vasudha gave up practicing law. Vasudha Rohatgi is the daughter of Late G.L. Sanghi, who was also an Indian senior advocate. Mukul and Vasudha have two sons: Nikhil Rohatgi and Sameer Rohatgi.Sameer Rohatgi, the younger son, practices as an advocate in the Delhi High Court, family courts, and district consumer forums. Mukul also has a sister named Madhulika Singla. 

Initial Career Details 

After completing an LLB degree from Bombay University, Mukul started practicing under Yogesh Kumar Sabarwal in the Delhi High Court. Under the guidance of Sabarwal Mukul handled different cases, and after gaining experience from him he started his own legal practice. In 1978, the Bar Council of Delhi officially added him as an advocate. 1994, the Delhi High Court appointed Mukul as a senior counsel. In 1999, the Government of India appointed him as the Additional Solicitor General of India. 

International Representation by Mukul Rohatgi 

In 2006, the then Chief Justice of India chose Mukul to be part of the Indian delegation at the Indo-British Legal Forum in Scotland, where he presented his paper titled “Impact of Environmental Law on Human Rights.” In March 2015, the government of Australia and the High Court of Australia invited him to Canberra to attend the Indo-Australian Legal Forum. After five months, Mukul traveled to Astana to attend a meeting hosted by the Republic of Kazakhstan for the prosecutors general of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states.

High-profile Cases of Mukul Rohatgi 

In 2002 during the Gujarat riots, Mukul represented the government on fake encounter cases. During his period as Indian Attorney General Mukul defended the central government in various cases including triple talaq, fake encounters in Manipur, challenges to the Aadhar case, and criminal defamation. In 2015, speculations arose that the government asked Mukul to leave the office because he failed to defend the government in the case of the National Judicial Appointments Commission. Mukul Rohatgi defended the government in 2017 on their policy of demonetization. During his stint as India’s Attorney General, he was very close to PM Narendra Modi and his Cabinet. Mukul has defended many high-profile people, some of his high-profile clients are Indian politicians like Jayalalitha, and Anil Ambani in a dispute between the Ambani brothers, Adanis and Robert Vadra. 

Special Prosecutor Appointments

In 2018, the Maharashtra government paid him ₹1.20 crore after appointing him as a special prosecutor in the BH Loya death case. 2020, the Bihar government appointed him Sushant Singh Rajput suicide case. In 2021 he represented Facebook and WhatsApp, the social media giants against the Delhi High Court for changing IT rules. Mukul also won a high-profile case on 28 October 2021 of superstar Shahrukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan’s drug case. He was on the team of Khan’s along with Satish Maneshinde and other senior advocates.

IIn 2008, the then Prime Minister of India awarded the senior counsel. January 2010, Times of India included Mukul in the list of the top 10 Indian lawyers. In 2015, Sr. Ad. Rohatgi featured in Legal Eagles, a book that tells the stories of the top seven Indian lawyers.

In February 2023 Mukul and Vasudha bought a 2,100 square feet bungalow worth 160 crores at Delhi’s Golf Links. Mukul is very passionate about supercars. He is often seen driving to the courts, as he owns a BMW 7 series, Bentley, and other luxurious cars.
